FALL 2018

Awakened Relating

Week 1 – The foundation: relationship with self

  • Reflect on 3 words or phrases that best describe what it is that you desire in relationships. Take your time to allow your deepest intentions to surface. Write them down.
  • Commit to developing an intimate relationship with yourself by bringing awareness to your moments as often as possible (breath, body, mind, feelings, energy).
  • When do you check out of presence with yourself?
  • Regularly sit quietly with yourself for any amount of time.
  • Meditations 1 through 4 would be appropriate.

Week 2 – Every relationship is a perfect mirror for energies and emotions that want to be liberated to reveal a more evolved and authentic version of yourself.

  • Continue to develop an intimate relationship with yourself by bringing awareness to your moments as often as possible (breath, body, mind, feelings, energy).
  • Notice how you respond to your relationships and cultivate curiosity around the energies that are being brought to your consciousness. Consider their importance in your growth.
  • Welcome relational energies into your meditation practice.
  • Meditations 5 through 8 would be appropriate. (as well as 1 through 4)

Week 3 – Resting as Presence

First something from the book Awakened Relating. The author Lynn Marie Lumiere includes a story and quote from one of her clients: “For a couple of years now, I’ve made feeling pain a sacred and consistent practice. I set aside time to be with the most difficult, terrifying and heart-wrenching pain I have ever let myself be with by doing the most courageous thing I can think of: I feel it. As I remain detached from my mind’s stories about the emotions and sensations, I focus on releasing them from my body while remaining aware of the presence of Being.I own every piece of it.” Lynn Marie goes on to say that this has created significant changes in her client’s capacity to Love, relate in wholesome ways and rest as Being.

This week we explored the 2 levels of experience:

1. focusing on details (thoughts, sensations, emotions, etc.)

2. resting as Presence.

Here are the questions that we answered in our journals in the exercise:

When I am focusing on details:

  • What sensations arise in my body?
  • What stories do I tell?
  • What emotions do I feel?
  • How do I relate to challenging situations?
  • What do I value?

When I am resting as Presence:

  • What sensations arise in my body?
  • What stories do I tell?
  • What emotions do I feel?
  • How do I relate to challenging situations?
  • What do I value?

And finally:

  • What prevents me from resting as Presence more often?
  • What are 3 simple and practical things that I can do to cultivate my capacity to rest as Presence more often in my daily life?

Meditations 11, 12, and 13 would be appropriate for this weeks topic.

Week 4 – Gazing

This week we experienced gazing.

The homework is to spend some time gazing into your own eyes using a mirror. Try 5 minutes and stay longer if you would like. Journal your experience. Notice how this relates to your current experience in relationship.

Week 5 – Stop running with the help of the chakras

If you sit
just long enough
with sadness, fear or longing
or some strange energy or urge you can’t even name
if you sit in a place of no hope and no expectation
if you open your heart wide in meditation
the sadness eventually softens
the fear becomes intimate
its imagined edges and boundaries dissolving into the vastness
and it reveals its deep intelligence and benevolent nature
for at the core of everything we run away from
is everything we long for
but we’ll never know
if we keep
running.

Jeff Foster

  • This week we spent time getting to know the territory of the chakras more deeply.
  • Meditations 9 and 10 would be helpful to continue this exploration.
  • When you are experiencing challenges in relationship, let go of the story and simply meditate on the chakras … journal what you notice.
